RIVERBEND PHONE LOSERS

Live Webcam Alton, Illinois is located next to the Mississippi River, just a few miles from St. Louis, Missouri. Closeby are Wood River, East Alton, Roxana and Bethalto but I'll probably limit this page mostly to just Alton info. This page is not only an official PLA State Site, but also contains useful information for Alton area computer nerds such as myself. There is even more local information offered on my home page so make sure you visit that too.

Got A Scanner?

If you're a scanner buff and know of any frequencies I'm missing, please e-mail me immediately. I'm looking for the frequencies for any nearby fast food joints, Alton Square's mall security, Ace Hardware and Lowe's.

Cordless Telephones

Below is a listing of the basic 10 & 25 channel (non-900 MHz) phones. There is a frequency for both the base and the handset of the phone but you should only need to program in the base since that picks up both sides. If you program in the handset, usually you'll only hear one side of the conversation but sometimes when they're finished with their call, you can still hear what's going on inside their house. The sound quality of this sucks, though. Channels 1 through 25 are the 25 channel phone freqs (of course) and channels 16 through 25 are the 10 channel freqs. If you only have a ten channel scanner then program in the base sides of 16 through 25.

2600 Meetings

St. Louis's 2600 hacker meetings are rather active with around 20 to 30 in attendence each month. They are held on the first Friday of each month at 5pm until about 9pm in the food court of the St. Louis Galleria Mall. See the frequencies section of this page for mall security frequencies.

The best way to get there from Alton (in my opinion) is to take the Clark Bridge to 367, get on 270 west, take 170 south and turn right on Brentwood. About a mile from there you'll see the mall on your right. For more information on the 2600 meetings you can visit my 2600 page.

Computer Stores

  • Techs On Wheels This isn't an actual store, but this guy has great deals on hardware. Call him at 466-5917.

  • Pyramid Computers This store doesn't have the best selection in the world, but they're the closest to me and rather convenient for making emergency purchases like parallel cables and VGA extension cords. They're located by the mall where Rainbow Computers used to be. 463-0175

  • Platos I know, I know, they're not called Platos anymore after the little lawsuit incident, but I can never think of this store being called anything but Platos. They're located on Ferguson Street in Wood River and have an awesome selection of new hardware and used consignment stuff. 254-8618

    Carrier Scan

A carrier scan? Are you kidding? Ameritech only offers one rate plan which means that we have to pay anywhere from 3 cents to 5 cents for every single local phone call we make! If I were to do an exchange scan for just one prefix in the area, it would cost me about $400 to dial the 10,000 numbers. If I scanned all of them in Alton, it'd be about $2400. So until I leave this town my carrier scanning days are over. I'll try to find some BBS numbers to put up here, though.

    BBS Numbers

The few, the proud, the only ones left after the Great Internet Invasion of 1995. Sadly, I asked if anyone knew of any BBS numbers in the area on a local web forum and the only replies I got were people asking me what a BBS was. Here are the phone numbers to all the existing BBSes in the area that I know of:

618-398-8186: The Clip Joint. This one has been around for as long as I can remember and is run by vetran BBSer, Dappy.

618-931-2276: Stickee's BBS. Drop 'em baby! Another good BBS that's been around for awhile.

    618-372-7546: The Launchpad.

    618-234-1231: Iceman's BBS.

    618-877-3615: Twist of Cain.

    Phone Company Test Lines

I haven't even attempted to find the test lines around here. I'll get to that someday. I used to have a TON of them in the Wood River 618-254-99xx exchange but they all went dead just a couple years ago. If some still exist then I'll find them soon...

    Area Wire Centers

Below I've listed all the local exchanges and the corresponding phone company wire centers. In most cases here the wire center in the same as the city name but not always. Everything listed is run out of the Collinsville Engineering Office and if you were an Ameritech technician you would call the Springfield office to make inquiries. An astrisk next to the wire center name indicates that this is the primary exchange in that particular area, also known as the LFACS Code. 618-225 Granite City - Triangle
